Alternative Energy Living

This page describes using alternative energy or solar power in association with the commercial power grid. Although there are no alternative energy sources there now, this could be a great option for anyone interested in being more self-sufficient.

[Living with alternative energy can conjure up images of life on the frontier, without the simplest of luxuries like a hot shower. But this not need be true. There does not need to be a lack of anything -- except high electric bills -- and still be easy on the environment.]

Excellent Alternative Energy Location Possible for Solar and Wind Power

Although this property in Northern Arizona is serviced with 200 Amps of commercial power, the mild climate here is very well suited for alternative energy homes. Unlike many places in the Midwestern or Eastern parts of the United States, here in the White Mountains of Arizona the sky is usually sunny with few cloudy days, providing excellent solar energy year around. There also are good wind energy resources here for a wind power generator (windmill or wind turbine), if so desired. Then, when there are days without sun and at night, the wind generator would be available to produce electricity. (Much of the surrounding area is populated with off-the-grid homes and properties.)

Several Incentive Programs Available

Because the power company servicing this property is APS, you can take advantage of several incentives available to have a hybrid system that uses both commercial power and alternative systems. APS helps their customers setup systems that use solar power when it is available, and use APS power when the demand exceeds the solar system’s capability.

Conditions when commercial power would be used include things like house air conditioning, 220VAC water pumps, frost proof horse water dispensers, etc., and of course at night. However, when the solar system is producing more power than is being consumed, APS gives “credits” that offset the electric utility bill.

APS offers an incentive of up to $3.00 per watt (DC) when you install solar panels on your home and connect to the power grid.  Your installer will help assure your system is designed with the most optimal roof placement and sun angle to qualify for the greatest incentive.

Federal Tax Credit – Equal to 30% of total system cost (beginning 1/12/09).

Arizona State Tax Credit – Equal to 25% of total system cost up to $1,000

For many people, to have a home using alternative energy is both a place and also a state of mind, powered by the sun, the wind and their convictions.

Many people who rely on solar power look at the sun with a whole new sense of appreciation. They see the sun and they think, "Now I'm going to get myself some electricity." For many, the best part of using alternative/solar energy is independence and economy.
